On the east slope of the Ex-Northern Pacific mainline over Stampede Pass, a westbound freight roars uphill towrds Martin, the control point at the east portal of the grade's summit tunnel. An SD40 leads 4 F-units and a Geep through a signal bridge cluttered with semaphores and signals. For over a decade this grade would remain "abandoned" by BN but then in 1994 under pressure from shippers to increase capacity to the Seattle/Tacoma area, BN began to rebuild and eventually re-opened Stampede Pass. Today one can railfan there again, although traffic is pretty sparse.
